About The Jamboree Heights State School P & C

GENERAL
The P & C is about people – people just like you – parents, care givers and community minded people who want to help their school. You work very closely with your school, building a stronger school community, where all children benefit. A lot can and has been achieved through the P & C and school working together towards common goals. To continue the great work, P & Cs need people from all walks of life and with a range of talents who are committed to delivering great outcomes for our children and school. Everybody has a role to play and your ideas will be heard. The more people involved, the more exciting and successful it will be.

The functions of a P & C are:
a) To generally foster community interest in educational matters;
b) To encourage closer co-operation between the parents, members of the community, the staff and students of the school;
c) To provide advice and recommendations to the Principal on issues & concerns in respect to the student body and the general operations and management of the school;
d) To provide or assist in the provision of financial or other resources, services for the benefit of students of the school;
e) To participate in any committee or other body comprising members of the school and wider community, which will contribute to the general benefit of students attending the school.

EXECUTIVE COMMITEE
As with any organisation, P & C's have an executive committee, which consists of:

-President
-Vice President
-Secretary
-Assistant Secretary
-Treasurer
-Assistant Treasurer

The President is usually the face of the P & C, attending meetings, signing letters, etc, with the Vice President performing these duties as needed.

The Secretary distributes mail, takes meeting minutes, organises newsletters and other notices, with these tasks being shared with the Assistant Secretary.

The Treasurer presents an account balance and report at meetings (some may have to also prepare this, however at the JHSS P & C, we have a bookkeeper), and perform banking duties, also shared with the Assistant Treasurer.

We also encourage other positions to be filled such as a QCPCA Representative (QCPCA being the Queensland Council of Parents and Citizens Associations), Fundraising Coordinator, and Grants Coordinator.

Executive Committee 2009
President: Karen Hook (president@jhss.com.au)
Vice-president: Joanne Mortensen (oshc.committee@jhss.com.au)
Secretary: Dana Galligan (secretary@jhss.com.au)
Treasurer: Linda Richardson (info@jhss.com.au)

SCHOOL SUPPORT COMMITTEES
We have a number of parent-run sub-committees, as this not only allows parents to participate in specific areas of interest, but it takes some fundraising and organising work from the P & C general committee. We currently have the following sub-committees:

Sport
Music
Outside School Hours Care
Safety
H.E.A.L.T.H (a place for anyone interested in, or effected by, children's health issues)

There are also a few areas that have traditionally had sub-committees, but currently do not have enough members or are new areas of interest. Please let us know if you are interested in the following areas:

Fundraising/Fetes
Extra-Curricular Activities (P.E.C.A.C - formerly the Science Committee)
Tuckshop
Healthy Food Choices
Prep

This is by no means final or exhaustive. Any ideas for new committees or interest in assisting an existing one are very welcome, so let us know.

WHAT CAN I DO?
There are many ways you can be involved in your P & C, ranging from simply reading the newsletters to becoming part of the executive. The more help we get, the more effective an organisation we can be.
Here are some of the things you can do:

- Read the fortnightly newsletter to keep in touch with what is happening.
- Come to monthly meetings, each 3rd Monday at 7pm in the OSHC building.
- Join a sub-committee - click on the above links to find out more about them.
- Give us you feedback or ideas on any topic, project, event, etc.
- Become an executive or general committee member.
- Offer occasional classroom help.
- Make a few phone calls to organise a fundraiser or suggest a new fundraising idea.
- Join us for one tuckshop shift.
- Help set up, pack up, cook, server or sell at school events.
- Have a go at craft things.
- Give an extra hand on excursions.
- Be on "Stranger Danger" alert, and report any dangerous behaviour by cars, or people, etc.
- Writing letters to apply for grants.
- Driving responsibly, or "Park 'n' Walk" - see our Safety Committee page for tips.
- Let us know of your professional services like plumbing, building, landscaping etc, as there are always projects that need quoting and completing.
- Advertise in the newsletter or sponsor an event.
- Write a short review of an event, book, or just an interesting article for the newsletter.
- Or simply ask us - "What can I do to help?"

We have approximately 30 regular parents out of more than 500 that do all the above things and more. The school and community are always pleased with the financial and educational benefits their work brings, so imagine if every parent found something they could contribute to the P & C!!

Contact us to find out more, offer support or give us a suggestion, and you can be the difference between learning the basics and "Learning For Life" in your child's education.
